(For the record, cleaning of any kind is being unproductive. It is sometimes necessary, I grant that freely. But it is never productive.)
Unfortunately, I didn't have time to do a complete job. So what I did was I took two boxes and just started moving piles of clutter off of the desk and drawing table, into the boxes. Whenever I found a piece of junque that I knew had a different home (be it another room, a particular shelf, the recycle bin, or the trash), I would put it there. But 90% of the piles around here are made up miscellaneous non-categorizable stuff that has no clear home. Keroberos lapel pins. Index cards I use at cons to make badges. Coloring tutorials on CD-ROM. Pinky-ring sized replicas of the One Ring. A single Street Fighter trading card. Stuff like that.
The other thing I did, was to use a combination of a can of compressed air and a vacuum cleaner to clear off the layers and layers of DUST that had piled up. Everything, even stuff I use regularly, had at least a visible layer, and hidden areas (such as under the drawing table) were quite disgusting. :P So even as I was moving piles and tossing pens into boxes, I was vacuuming like a wild man.
I guess you'd call it spring cleaning. Unfortunately, now I have two boxes full of STUFF that still need to be sorted and their contents moved to proper homes, the night is gone, and I don't have the energy to do any drawing. But the good news is, a lot of the visual clutter (and its attendant stress-induction, hopefully) has been removed, making for a saner and hopefully more usable space.
I still have some major organizing to do with the bookshelves down here -- neither the gaming shelf nor the art shelf can hold any more and they're spilling out onto the floor and surrounding areas. I'm going to have to sort through them and start tossing stuff where I can -- but not tonight. And probably not any time this week, either. Maybe next week. After, y'know, I finish with these two boxes.
