Press On the Accelerator, and Spin Out!

Last night, as part of my plan to get in a little vital goofing off before attacking the Too Much To Do List again tonight, I picked up a copy of "Project Gotham Racing" and tooled around with it until I got frustrated. I actually wanted something closer to Out Run or Cruis'n Exotica, with more emphasis on pretty scenery and OTT action and less on actually knowing how to stunt-drive a car.

Of course, I've never liked platformer controls; it's entirely possible that with less binary controllers that I would do better, but on the X-Box I ended up swerving all over the road and frequently spinning out just from pressing the accelerator. There were only two cars that I could manage with any real consistency ... one was the Ferrari Enzo, and the other was a low-slung Italian exotic that looked sorta like a shiny white version of the Batmobile, but I forget the name. Of course, neither of those cars are unlockable in the main game until you've beaten it all in a Yugo.

So by the end of the night, I was pretty disgusted. There's only so many times you can attempt to get "third place or better" in a Ford Escort (or whatever it was) before it stops being fun. I started to get the hang of slides a little, but it seems to me that they're way too easy, as if every race were being run on gravel. Not every turn a car ever makes puts it into a slide! Particularly not street cars running at 45 mph through the twisty back-alleys of Florence.

The other part of my plan was to watch the first three episodes of Comic Party Revolution, which has just come out. So far it's okay but not as involving as the first Comic Party series. The voices are a bit grating, unfortunately, particularly Emi's and Subaru's. The new guy playing Taishi seems to be good, but so far Taishi has been little more than a bit player. I'm hoping it will improve with time, however. It needs more focus on the whole "creating a comic" angle, more humor, and of course, more Taishi, before it will be as good as the previous series.

Huh. I liked Project Gotham. Then again, I come from a Gran Turismo background, so PGR was a step up in terms of thrills.

Crusin' Exotica? That kind of game just messes me up.

I'm right there with you... The only racing game I ever liked was Burn Out 3, and the main idea in that game is to crash into stuff!

So, are you annoyed by the car/cart/thing races shoehorned into just about every platformer? I am. Many/most feel as though they were put there to please the racing crowd, of which I am not a member.

Honestly, I don't notice the cart games one way or another. As a genre it just completely flies under my radar.

I try not to play cart racers for the simple fact that I get frustrated and start yelling at television. So I have issue with games that try to be games they are not. Like putting half formed cart racing games in the middle of a platformer.
