My mom is still not well and my sister is stressing out from trying to act as her would-be nurse without much in the way of support from my dad or my brother. I'm leaning towards hiring some kind of private nurse for a couple of weeks, since my mom has so many wonky medications that all have to be taken under such specific circumstances (in the morning, after a meal, unless it's Wednesday).

Apparently they (the doctors that Betsy took my mom to over the weekend) were concerned that she might be having a stroke, so they ran a CAT scan on her, which came up negative. But then they left her in a quarantine room adjacent to the ER for hours on end while they tried to work out the logistics of getting her a hospital room, and in the end gave up because of all the weird conditions required and sent her home.

Now my mom is not getting all of her prescribed medications, because my dad doesn't have the faculties to remember all the details, and my brother is too busy sitting in the living room, smoking and watching "South Park" -- at least, that's how my sister describes the situation. Of course, he does have a broken arm, which makes it hard for him to do much physical stuff, but he could at least help keep track of the pills. I suspect the main reason he hasn't is that nobody's asked him to and it just doesn't occur to him to volunteer.

Anyway, the net result of all of this is that I will probably spend a lot more of my time in the next few weeks dealing with family health issues; don't be surprised if SJ and possibly NN get sidelined while I am taking care of all this.

There was a little good news today, tho; as some or all of you may know, the house we were trying for fell through ... today we looked at another one that is even nicer and which we will probably put an offer on tomorrow. But I'm not telling you where it is, in case any of you envious NoVA types try to snatch it out from under us! ;P More details about it later. Right now, I need some more rest.

PS: I'm just kidding about that "envious" thing, you know that right?

Gosh, I hope everything with all the family health concerns. We'll look forward to good news on the housing front!

So her meds are too complicated for the HOSPITAL and they send her home with no support for the family???????????????? Dude...that's seriously wrong. There's gotta be SOMEthing out there to help. Even in the backwoods of Missouri we have Visiting Nurse services!

The meds weren't the problem, it was getting a quarantined room with neurological care facilities.

We're going to be looking into visiting nurse-type services. My sister is worried about the expense, but if it's needed, it's needed.

Your mom must have a really sharp mind if she can take the wonky meds correctly.

Not having much experience with emergency rooms, or hospitals in general, I have to wonder why this one was so disorganized. Getting a room for someone who might have had a stroke should be easy.

Can your brother be prodded into helping with the pills?

SJ and NN slipping is understandable, and kind of expected.

Lots of luck with the second house.

They needed a room that was a) unoccupied, b) quarantined, and c) had neurologic care facilities. They couldn't meet all three criteria.

Brother-prodding will probably commence this afternoon.

Very sorry to hear about the situation. I hope someone can help with the pills, and that you get your house this time. Keeping my fingers crossed:)

Thanks! Me too!

*hugs back*

Thanks. The plot is sickening thickening, apparently ... I'm meeting with my sister later today to confer about it all.

Oy vey! I sure hope your Mom starts to do better, and that everything gets worked out so no one person is being stressed to death to take care of her.

Sorry to hear about the first house offer falling through, been there, done that, got the t-shirt and it sucks. Though when it is all said and done, the second house we offered for and won is actually a better deal. So perhaps there is a reason you didn't get the first one. I hope your offer on this one is accepted. Good luck.

Anyway, hang in there, everything will be okay.

Thanks! We're doing our best! :)

Oh do I ever know what you mean about parents and lots of meds. I'm just lucky in that I have a sister who is a nurse and sets up the meds usually a week at a time. Still I do have to keep at the folks every now and then about that.

Good luck on the house.

Thanks! :)

BTW, how's the Bowflex workin' out? (So to speak...)

Jan. 25th, 2007 01:27 pm (UTC)
Still trying to get a place carved out to use the Bowflex. The first place I had planned to use it didn't work out. Not unless I made a hole in the wall for my hand to go through. Got to do some moving of boxes and see if I can use it then.
