Aww, Crap

Dragon and Dungeon magazines to discontinue.

I'm shocked. I'm stunned. I'm ANGRY.

And here I thought what they did to E-Tools was bad!

A world without Dragon magazine is barely comprehensible. It's like having one of your school buddies die.

I'm depressed now. :(

It's all about the $ I'm sure...

I remember buying Dragon back when I was deep into AD&D, say 1980 or so. If they were publishing 12 issues a year for their entire run, they've been around for 29 years or so, which is remarkable.

They're thinking that the magazine barely pays for itself... which is probably true if you rate it only by income generated by magazine sales. As a marketing tool and testing-ground for staff and talent, though, it generated considerably more than that. But then, it's not news that Hasbro's bean-counters don't know - or care - fuck-all about the gaming business.

That's the second biggest business mistake that I have ever seen!

And that's coming from someone who never had a subscription nor read the magazines --- I have enough as it is to add more from magazines, anyway.

I want to say "Further proof WoTC is going down the crapper", but what more proof do we need. >.> <.<

Yep. End of an era for sure. That magazine accompanied my first exploratins into gaming... geh, almost 30 years ago. I haven't bought it in ages (not being a D&D fan, really), but I'll still miss the fact of its existence.

Man, I hate Hasbro.

;_; I'm sad.

I suggest you tell 'em how you feel...
and those who hate it and feel sad should make their voices known.

It might not make a difference, but you will have known that you tried...

Re: I suggest you tell 'em how you feel...
Well, I've posted on their boards, but I'm pretty certain they don't read 'em. I'm going to write a letter when I'm calmer. But that'll take a while.

I only ever read Dragon for the comics.

Now if one could find some of those old comics collected (I've already got What's New with Phil & Dixie) I'd be thrilled...

And thus, another thread from my childhood has been cut. :(

I first found Dragon when I started playing D&D my senior year. It had already been out 3 years. Had a subscription all through my Air Force years too (which caused me trouble, but that's a different story.) Had a stack 6 dozen tall. Finally, one move, I just couldn't handle all my magazines and papers anymore. So I trashed them. And since I don't game anymore (schedule and lack of nearby gamers prevent it) I never got a subscription again. But I would see the magazine on the racks and think wistfully back to my carefree days.

I'll need something else to remind me of my youth now. Crap.

:< I was offered a replacement subscription to Dragon when Top Deck went out of business. If it's any consolation, I've got Vol. 297 and 298 in my bookshelf still (Though a friend of mine from years back probably still has the others)... Would you like them?
Or maybe we can start a petition to keep it going?
