Too Many Hughs! And Other Thoughts

I seem to be collecting Hughs. The same way in school I knew something like fifty Davids and half a dozen Johns, it struck me this morning that I have an inordinate fondness for Anglo (or Aussie) Hughs.

Imagine for a moment Hugh Jackman, Hugh Grant, and Hugh Laurie sitting around a bar:

"Well, Hugh!"
"G'day, Hugh!"
"Hugh, see who it is? It's Hugh! How's the wife, Hugh?"
"She's fine, Hugh. And yours?"
"God, Hugh, don't ask. But how about that TV show of yours, eh Hugh?"
"Nothing compared to yours, Hugh."
"You two are lucky; I wish I had a TV show."
"Oh, I dunno, Hugh, it's mighty demanding work. I miss the freedom of doing films."
"That's funny, Hugh, I was just talking to Stephen about that the other day."
"You know Stephen, Hugh?"
"Oh yeah, Hugh, I've known him for a long time, now. We met in the Groucho Club."
"Well, well, he's never mentioned it. He told me about meeting Hugh last year, though."

The imagination staggers.

Anyway, on a completely different note, I'm jonesin' for a new book to read. I've The Ninth Talisman by Lawrence Watt-Evans in my queue (sequel to The Wizard Lord, which I've written about elsewhere), but after gorging on Lord of the Rings I need to step away from fantasy for a bit. So I'm looking at any or all of these, and wanting to know if anybody has read them and can give me an opinion:

Waggle by Joe Redden Tigan
Blue Heaven by Joe Keenan
Object of My Affection or Alternatives to Sex: A Novel by Stephen McCauley
Cruel Shoes by Steve Martin
Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog) by Jerome K. Jerome

Any thoughts, out there in LJ-land?

In that case, I'll add it to the list!
