Just a Friendly Reminder

Tossing random "fuck"s, "fucking"s, and "damn"s into your writing doesn't make you sound enthusiastic. It makes you sound like an idiot.

So please, if you are not an idiot, do not engage in this practice.

But what about all those Hollywood script writers for action movies? Think of what would happen to them if they actually had to write real dialogue. ;)

Well, a lot of them are aiming for the all-important "Idiot Demographic" -- so the advice above doesn't apply to them.

Worse: there was a guy in my class who replaced "umm" with "fucking"...and thought real slow. In other words, the F-bomb was his most commonly said word.
the_gneech
Jun. 27th, 2007 01:19 pm (UTC)
I think I met that guy! Or someone very like him. "...and shit..." is another common placeholder for "um", which baffles me. "So like there was this guy and shit, and he was wanting me to do all this stuff and shit, but I just totally walked away and shit."

That must lead to dehydration after a while!

I think we should stop people writing "loosing" instead of "losing" and "brakes" instead of "breaks" (As in "to put the brakes on") first.

I'd hardly put 'damn' in the same league as the others.

I like a nice bit of damning, me.

It depends on the use. A superfluous "damn" is a wasted one!

Sorry, can't agree. Unless you're not talking about dialogue. Dialogue means that cussing will out. Rest of the prose doesn't need it, but not every character is going to be of pristine vocabulary.

I'm not talking about dialogue, although I think it tends to be over-used there, too. I'm talking about short essay (e.g., blog entries, film reviews, etc.).

Ya, dat annoys me, but nowhere near bad as da dialogue which us't th weird spellin' to show da speaker is usin' a dialect. At somen point, th writin' can become complete unreadable, an' da readr has to fight to wade through da text.

The above, of course illustrates, but I'm just not capable of doing it as badly as some authors do. Yeah, I understand wanting to tell me that someone (for example) speaks in a deep southern accent, or hackneyed british, or whatever, but there are limits, damnit! :)

'ere now, I resemble that remark!

'course, all I do is drop an occasional 'h' or slur an 'r' between vowels, usually.

Actually, I don't do any of that in my own writing unless it's to make a point -- just in word balloons!

Cheers,
Drez

That is a brilliant icon for this particular subject. And on the subject: I think it depends. Excitement? Generally not, but I know several people who only curse when angry. I think, if they are trying to express anger then it is appropriate even in written form where they have the added time that would normally allow them to edit out such vulgarity.

In stories with a fair group of characters, and if the writer is trying for "realism", at least ONE will probably be *rude & crude*. That said, if most or ALL the characters are *that way*, then...who in the world CARES about those miserable wretches!?!?!? They're SCUM! Go watch a cartoon!

Or perhaps it's just the writer showcasing how *rude & crude* HE/SHE is---

In my "realistic" fiction I try to keep the *R&C* stuff down to a minor rumble *when the characters permit me to*, but when you're portraying someone from the "less-than-genteel" side of life, having the goon speak in flowery "darn" and "heavens" and "my my!" phrases just won't wash.

OTOH, one should NEVER resort to that kind of coarse speech/writing in a blog, letter or email---unless one wants to showcase his/her lack of breeding to the world... }>-p

Yeah, there's a whole spectrum of cursewords to use. Why get stuck on just two?

Being serious for a moment, I have to agree. Cursewords are best used sparingly, if at all. Their effectiveness is blunted when used too often.
