Terrific News For a Tuesday Morning!

From dna_fans: Douglas Adams's Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency opens for business on Radio 4

Yes, I know that Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency is largely a recycling of Adams's work on Doctor Who, and that Dirk Gently himself is mostly a placeholder for the Doctor himself.

But I don't care! It's Dirk Gently! On BBC Radio 4! I'm going to squee like a cheerleader and you can't stop me!

Andrew Sachs as Professor Chronotis? Yay!

Also:

> Michael Fenton Stevens as Michael Wenton Weakes

Coincidence? Or something more sinister?

It's funny -- the Couch Stuck In The Stairwell scene (among others) would fit right into the new Eccleston/Tennant Who, but not quite so well in the original series.

Maybe the current writers are just really heavily Adams-influenced.

On the other claw, I don't know if I've actually seen any Adams-penned serials of the original show.

Two were filmed and aired during Tom Baker's tenure, "The Pirate Planet" and "City of Death" -- a third, "Shada", was unfinished due to a writers' strike (although footage appeared in "The Five Doctors"), but was later redone as an animated version with Paul McGann's Doctor and can be seen here, including references to the events in "The Five Doctors" in order to smooth out continuity bumps.

Enjoy! :)

For the record, "Pirate Planet" is quite good, if wildly over-the-top. "City of Death" has a lot of great moments, and would be the best Doctor Who episode of all time if it didn't have so much relentless padding footage of the Doctor and Romana running all over Paris (another side-effect of the writers' strike, I gather).

BBC 7 played it as audio only about a year ago--quite entertaining :)

I was just remembering the "conservation of energy" banter between The Doctor and Romana in "Pirate Planet". Good stuff!
