Happy Birthday, jakebe!

For your present, here's today's Forgotten English (© Jeffrey Kacirk):

ure
A dampish mist; an atmospheric haze, especially of a coloured nature; Scotland. To pray [1200s]. To have good fortune [1400s].

Death of Ben Jonson (1572-1637),

English playwright, alleged to have been the only person denied admission to heaven because of a typographical error. It seems that after Jonson was laid to rest vertically in his tiny one-by-one-foot plot in the floor of Westminster Abbey, a workman who was hired to carve his epitaph erred slightly. Instead of the chiseled description "O rare Ben Jonson," which has graced the memorial for 370 years, it has been argued that what was intended was for the O and rare to have been joined to form the Latin word orare, which referred to prayer. This alternative inscription would have called for prayers to be said for the playwright: the not-so-religious Jonson might well have needed them. Instead, the inscription reads as an obsequious compliment, which Jonson undoubtedly would have preferred.
