Face of Boe

Saw the finale of Doctor Who season three today.

Characterization of The Master kind of weird ... I'm used to him being suave, charismatic, and sinister ... rather than a giggling looney. Still, it was nice to get a glimpse of Gallifrey-as-it-was.

As someone said elsewhere, "The Master dying just to piss off the Doctor -- that works."

Nice twist about Captain Jack's peculiar form of immortality.

I do miss multipart stories. One 45-minute episode is just not enough to get your teeth into a good Doctor Who story. I freely admit that some of those 4-part and 6-part episode from the classic series were chock full of padding -- but the single-episode stories almost always rush by too fast, feeling like you're getting the "Reader's Digest" version.

"Blink" worked very well as a single-parter, I will say that.

I feel that the manic Master was a reply to the people who said that Tennant himself was too - well, bouncy. Jacobi-Master said it himself - 'If The Doctor can be young, why can't I?' So they re-imagined The Master to be the annoying, over the top, Doctor taken too far. I rather liked the idea.

Of course, I'd've preferred it if Jacobi had stayed on - the first scene where he's truely The Master sent chills down my spine.

YES! He was fantastic as the Master for those few seconds before he regenerated.

Call me nuts, but I wouldn't have minded Alan Rickman as The Master. He would have done sinister well.

The headmaster from "School Reunion" would have been very good, too.

But I miss the goatee!

Jacobi did the voice for The Master in several of the audio adventures, as well as the Master-droid in Scream of the Shalka. He was good!

To me, The Master seemed like he was written as an evil version of the 10th Doctor.

You're thinking the next regeneration. :P

If you check the audio commentary on the BBC web site, the Jack twist turns out to be not what it looks like.

For which I suspect that many fangirls - and I know that a lot of people with interest in consistent continuity - were very, very grateful. :)

Oh, the fangirls are going to be too busy with Doctor/Master slash to care about Jack anymore.

Every regeneration of the Doctor has had a different personality, why not the Master?

I would love a full season as "one episode" - great fun! Would like a re-do of the Tardis interior, or seeing more of it's innards.

The commentary sounds a bit like they've been drinking - spoiler please?

*sigh* Not watching television does have a couple of drawbacks. This happens to be one.

I admit freely that I am delighted by the spinoff Torchwood featuring Captain Jack. He's yummy, if a bit arrogant and sure of himself.

I also have to admit that I had doubts about Tennet being able to pull off the Doctor following up after Eccleston. But after about the second show of this season I revised my opinion. I have to say I really like David's style too.

I haven't gotten to see the final episode just yet, so I'm glad you didn't really give too much detail, though I am bummed that the season is over so fast, I remember being excited about it restarting not so long ago. At least I still have Torchwood and Heros to tide me over.

I said something very similar about the Master dying :)

I miss the old format too - those cliffhangers used to have me longing for next week.
