Cosmic Horror, or Old News?

I think that one of my problems with Call of Cthulhu is that, while the idea that humanity has just appeared in an eyeblink of the universe, spinning away on our tiny little microdot-on-a-microdot planet may have been a realization to blast the mind in the 1920s, it's not exactly a newsflash to anybody around these days. We live in a society that thinks quantum uncertainty makes for funny jokes about cats and has mathematical formulae showing just exactly when the expansion of the universe overcame the ability of gravity to make it contract again. So far from being driven mad by the existence of Azathoth, Shub-Niggurath, and Yog-Sothoth, I expect that at this stage we'd find it comforting to know for sure we aren't alone in the universe.

The problem is finding out we aren't alone in the universe… and everything else either wants to eat us/experiment on us/use us for breeding stock/etc., or is just this primordial thing that destroys reality as we know it when it intersects with our world.

more that the folks in the Cthulhu mythos realize that we share the universe with beings that are to us what we are to, say, bacteria or maybe ants. Also knowing that they care about us in much the same way, if we are LUCKY. When we're not, they're a bored kid with a magnifying glass on a sunny day.
