T-Rexes Don't Scare Ya, Huh?

How about this guy?

Dragon (CL 20 / 64,920 XP)


This stat block is for the classical "giant, flying, fire-breathing brute," rather than for sophisticated riddle-telling tea-drinkers. To make a sophisticated riddle-telling tea-drinker, increase the Int to 18, giving the dragon five additional trained skills (presumably in the Knowledge or Perform arenas, or Spellcraft if you want it to cast spells). You can also give your dragon levels in Scholar or other appropriate classes.

Crush A dragon may attempt to land (or jump) upon its foes, crushing them under its body. Moving into its foes' space provokes an attack of opportunity. If the crush attack is successful, the targets take the crush damage immediately, are considered pinned, and begin to suffocate. They continue to take the crush damage every round until the dragon moves, at which point they are left prone in the square they occupied when they were attacked. Any foe that is not hit by the crush attack is immediately moved out of the crush-effect square to the nearest unoccupied square.
Flame Breath A dragon's flame breath may be spread in a 10-square cone or a 20-square line, automatically attacking everything within the area of effect. Any creature that takes damage from the dragon's breath catches on fire and begins to take normal fire damage on the next round (see the normal fire rules). The dragon may not use its flame breath again until 1d4 rounds have passed.
Natural Armor A dragon's thick scales give it +10 natural armor and DR 10 (bypassed by magic weapons).
Snatch A dragon that hits with a bite or claw attack may immediately attempt a grapple check against that target as a free action. If successful, the target is considered to be carried by the dragon, taking damage automatically until it escapes. The dragon is not considered grappled; a common tactic is to fly to a great height and drop the target.
Spell Resistance A dragon's inherently magical nature gives it +15 to all defense scores against the effects of spells. The dragon may choose to suppress this ability.
Tail Slap A dragon that successfully hits with its tail slap moves the target 1 square any direction as with a bull rush. The target cannot be moved into a solid object or another creature's fighting space.

Certainly something your adventurers wouldn't want to run into but then again as an ally what a tank you'd have. Just out of curiosity you don't happen to have stats on a gryphon do you?

Actually, I don't. ;) The only dragons I've done much with were D&D 3E dragons, which are pretty darn fearsome for the most part.

Look at it's will save. ;-) I'm just kidding, this one's much better, especially since it can fly. CL 20, though... sounds like more Wizard bait. ;-)

Looking at the skills it has, I'd say this is from 4th Ed, yes? I know, like, nothing about 4th Ed, but I do know Blizzard. There's bound to be a touch attack spell that does horrible, horrible things to those of weak will, spell resistance notwithstanding. That's what Spell Penetration feats are for. ^.^

I am such a bad gamer, me and my min-maxing ilk. >.

Actually, this is a Saga Edition version, not a 4E version. SWSE doesn't have touch attacks, and with its spell resistance the dragon has an effective Will defense of 29. A 20th-level sorcerer that maxed out his Cha and arcane attack would probably be able to dominate such a critter, yes — but that's perfectly in-genre. (I can think of several examples of a sorcerer unleashing a dragon on a helpless countryside.)

There was an early Slayers episode where a dragon was raised by bandits as a pet, until Lina destroyed all the bandits and the dragon got loose with no one to control it...


Fortunately for her, she knew the Dragon Slave spell. Not so fortunate for the town she was defending as a Dragon Slave spell did more damage than the Dragon itself did. heehee.

Oh, wait, this has nothing to with Saga Edition either. But it was still fun!

If hit by Tail Slap and slammed into a wall, is damage incurred? What about for a spiked wall?
And how does it not move a person into another creature's fighting space? I can imagine a proper tail slap can knock an adventurer into his or her team-mate and knock them both over by maybe another space or so! Dragons is big beasties!

Well, the tail slap specifies the target can't be moved into a solid object, which negates the whole "slammed into a wall" part.

Normally, "tail slap" just whomps somebody upside the head for hp damage. If you want to knock people over, that's "trip" or "throw." :)

I won't repeat my earlier tale of what happened when my Shadowrun group ran into a dragon earlier this month.

Instead, I'll just repeat what the IM conversation between my friend dragonrift and myself.

Me: So, what is your breath weapon anyway?
Rift: Minty freshness. :)
