Writer's Block: Full Moon Fever

It's the full moon today. Almost every culture has its share of lunar lore, from werewolves to lunacy to true love. Do you believe that the full moon affects our behavior or do you think it's a myth?

Every EMT or cop I've ever talked to about it says that the full moon is their busiest day of the month and is usually full of their strangest calls. However, given confirmation bias, I can't honestly say whether I believe it to be true or not. From an objective standpoint, I certainly can't think of any reason why a full moon should be different from any other moon from a behavioral standpoint. But I'm not going to tell that nice EMT or cop they're wrong to their face, either!

I've often heard folks say, after encountering some oddity, "Must be the full moon." Usually I check and find that the moon is nowhere near full.

Happens with kids, too. Supposedly female 'cycles' are tied into the lunar schedule; maybe other hormones and emotions and behaviour patterns are tied into it as well!

I'm inclined to believe it, mostly because it's stupid fun. Oh, and I'm a puppy! -Frisk

Ask someone you know in retail.

Or look up the statistics. Almost all crimes jump during the full moon, compared to the rest of the month. Ditto disturbances.

There's no obvious cause and effect, but there's definitely a correlation.

Well, one theory I heard is that there's more weird during the full moon is because there's more light out there for people to see what weird they're doing.

"certainly can't think of any reason why a full moon should be different from any other moon from a behavioral standpoint"

True certainly in most cases sir... though tonight (I hope you saw it) they said it's the closest the full moon will be to Earth for 15 years.

Yet another source
Most librarians know that, when patrons ask odd questions and behave strangely, it is a good idea to check the lunar calendar. We have a chart right at the desk. Many times, the moon is near full when odd behavior from customers occurs. Of course, that is not always the case. Just another source for you.
