Sugar Gliders and Other Randomness

I realize I haven't been posting much of consequence lately, but the sad truth is that I just haven't had that much to say. Life has consisted of work, LotRO, and sleep ... with occasional pauses to eat. Work in particular has been draining me more than it used to. Not sure why, it's not like I'm doing anything that difficult, but it just seems to take twice as much effort as it should. I'm tired of it, I suppose.

But there have been a few moments of note mixed in among the monotony. Friday night, for instance, we went over to Dulles Town Center for dinner and unexpectedly found a trio of guys dressed like Bruce who were displaying, performing tricks with, and selling sugar gliders, a cute lil' marsupial something like a cross between a chipmunk and a flying squirrel. The adults are slightly smaller than a squirrel; the young, which are the ones that were up for sale, are slightly smaller than the average field mouse. I was somewhat surprised to find an Aussie not-rodent being hawked as a pet in a Loudoun County shopping mall — hope this isn't paving the way for an Aussie critter invasion, or we'll end up with spiders that bite your head off and ducks with poison glands in their eyebrows.

Or something like that.

Anyway, last night there was a bonzai visit from kamau_d_lyon, which is always welcome. He came along with camstone_fox, moovios, and Alexis the Squirmy to Olive Garden followed by Starbucks, and we chatted about movies, the state of TV and film writing, SF, and heard about rotated buildings in Djibouti.

This naturally led to me singing "Choo-choo, choo-choo Djibouti, woo-woo, woo-woo Djibouti" all night. It's just the way I am.

Today, I work. Again. :P Trying to beat a deadline for a big project that I've been slacking on at work. I just have a lot of difficulty forcing myself to concentrate there these days. But this needs to be done, so I must force my nose to the grindstone. No LotRO for me today! Unfortunately, no drawing either. But I will post some sketches to the page tomorrow, just so people know I haven't forgotten them.

I leave you with this thought:

Pearls Before Swine, by Stephan Pastis

There's a lesson there for all of us.

"Pearls": Best. Comic. Ever.

I understand Stephan Pastis loves to revel in such wordplay at times...and they're pretty ingenious at that. Here are a few others for you:

I'm not sure who's more evil... the artist responsible for those strips...
Or YOU for posting the links!

Selling sugar gliders in the mall makes me sad. They may be the epitome of cuteness, but apparently they're also rather hard to look after.

I read that this morning and had to stop myself from laughing at that joke. It was funny, but damn if I didn't want to admit that. ;)

Sugar gliders in America??

That's pretty surreal considering that in Oz we're not allowed to keep *any* of our own native animals as pets without a stack of permits.

Yes, that was all a good evening. It was great to finally start seeing people I hadn't seen in over a year. Hopefully in a couple of weeks I will be headed home and leave active duty behind me for a time at least.

Thanks for the great time.
