Cleaning Up My Act

I am not an inherently orderly person. In point of fact, I am a cluttery packrat. I inherited it from my parents, who are even worse about it than I am (as anyone who's seen their house will attest). Compared to them, I'm positively a neatnik. I always used to think it was the height of comedy that my mother would yell at me to clean my room ... I always wondered why my room should be the only clean one in the house.

Unlike some folks, it's not that I like clutter; it's just that I dislike clutter less than I dislike cleaning up the place. But lately that's started to change, which I think is at least partly related to stress. The more stressed I get about work/health/killer asteroids/whatever, the more clutter irks me. And few things stress me the way summer does, so as you can imagine, the past few weeks have been something like a constant buzzing noise just behind my right ear.

Some of it is also related to the way things have been changing at work. With our big I.T. reorganization, and the process of adopting the agile programming model, I've become even more "all about to-do lists" than I was before. My workday is now more-or-less spelled out ahead of time by my task list in Outlook, and while that sounds pretty dreary, it actually helps keep me focused and keeps things from slipping through the cracks, which in the long run cranks up my morale because I don't get irate calls from other departments asking where the heck is that thing I promised them a week ago and promptly forgot about. Moving cubicles again has also been a factor, as the new one is nice and tidy (aside from a stack of stuff that needs filing, that I've been whittling away at a little each day), and I would like to keep it this way.

All this New Shipshapeness at work is gradually influencing me at home, too. Last night I spent most of the evening going through boxes of miniatures that needed organizing and putting away, I've been a lot more consistent with things like laundry, dishes, and household accounting, and so on. There's still a long way to go before my workspace (and especially my drawing table) is the epitome of "a place for everything and everything in its place," but I can definitely see improvement, and I'm likin' it. :)

Clutter & you're folks?
Trust me Gneech: a late friend of mine turned out to be the ultimate pack rat.

When the executer started cleaning out the house he once owned they found stuff he jammed into nearly every crack and crevasse. They found 6 drawer filing cabinets packed with every cancelled check and receipt he'd ever written or had (including one for the file cabinet itself)!

He was a avid photographer and had thousands of prints, negatives and slides (most being astronomical in nature and they'll be digitized and archived for a local observatory).

Me.., I used to be a bit of a pack rat, but after moving 4 years ago I've learned to rid myself of the unnecessary items. To quote my grandfather, "Ah.., just through it out!"

Ahhhh!!! Look out for the Dust Bunnies!!

I've been doing this, myself. I had boxes that I hadn't really unpacked since I moved to Florida two-and-a-half years ago, stacks of old magazines, stuff like that. I've been systematically going through the rooms of my house (luckily, it's a small house) and cleaning each one, ridding it of the accumulated clutter. I'll tell you what, the place looks a lot better, there's not as much obvious junk about, and it wasn't as much trouble as I feared it would be. Now, the challenge will be keeping up with making sure it doesn't get to that state again!

I'm orderly, but when space gets low, it becomes orderly clutter :D

I'm with you on this one...

James and I are both incurable pack rats - unpacking from last September is still going on.

And we're NOT tidy - there are piles of boxes, stacks of CD's, towers of open computer cases with hard drives spilling out.

I'm not a fan of cleaning, neither is he, eventually though it'll get on my nerves - maybe it's the sense of needing control over SOMETHING when life is stressed and everything else is outta control... and then I tend to spend 1 or 2 days going at it in a frenzy of cleaningness - of course I'm bound to be mega cranky during the process so mostly people around me take my barked orders with a 'yes dear' and a quiet slink away to do as they're told.

Fortunately this only happens about twice a year
