Writer's Block: Theme Dining

If you were to open your own theme restaurant, what would the theme be and how would you express it to the customers?

I'd like to see an old-style Gentlemen's Club, by which I mean a place with wood paneling and baroque chandeliers, coat and tie required, where one lounges around in plush red leather chairs smoking pipes or cigars and making desultory chitchat, calling each other names like "Bingo" and "Catsmeat."

As opposed to the last "Gentlemen's Club" I saw advertised, which was actually a strip joint. :P

I foresee certain problems with this of course, not the least of which is that it would be rather lonely being the only person willing to put on a coat and tie and go to the place. -.- That, and I don't smoke. Also, I'd like for women to be there, now that I think about it, which rather negates the idea of it being a Gentlemen's Club.

Ladies' and Gentleman's Club perhaps? Where are women going to find a coat and tie to get in?

No, no.

The women have to wear bustles and corsets.

I know that some women quite fancy corsets — but I can't see myself requiring it of anyone.

Really a formal dress would be fine.

Hey, I was just trying for the theme of the hayday of Gentlemen's Clubs.

I've seen places like that in movies. Do they actually serve *food* there?

There's usually a restaurant associated with the place; even if they're not the same establishment, it'd be adjacent. Really all the Gentlemen's Club is, is a fancied-up bar.

A Gentleman's Club idea isn't bad, but it should have a smoking room too.

Now, I don't smoke, but since many still due, it would be a draw for some patrons.

As for me, a different theme: A Victorian theme or a "Rag Time" Theme.

I think I have the place in mind...
you want a SALON of class, taste and style.

and serve Starbucks coffee...

surely any proper establishment has jackets and ties available for a member or guest who happened to have forgotten one.

What you want is a Club 33, Disneyland.
Gentlemen wear coats and ties, ladies wear skirts, dresses, nice slacks.

My brother & sister-in-law went there as guests of someone else. They were not impressed, especially when an adult entree (two years back) ran $55 (starting) and $45 for children's.

Too pricey even for me.

Neovictorian steampunk theme. You'd get all the fun of victorian/edwardian era clothing with license to add whatever silly oddities you like.

As for smoking, with all the steam and some good ventilation, you'd never know, and could possibly have something steam-cleaned after to deal with residual scents.

I'm not entirely sure how the food would work out, but getting things to work in with the theme wouldn't be too hard. I see steaks/burgers cooked on a gear-embossed grill for appropriate grill-markings on the meat, freshly steamed... well anything you want, really.

For a brief period I worked at a club in Milwaukee that is quite similar to what you describe: Membership was only by recommendation of two other members, and the 'membership fee' was in the four-figure range. The club facilities were also quite impressive, including both public and private dining facilities, bedroom suites, TWO professional-level squash courts, a penthouse-level cocktail lounge, and a magnificent private library. There was of course a strict dress code, but that wasn't much of an issue, as you certainly wouldn't expect anyone who could join a club like this to think it was appropriate to strut in with jeans and a t-shirt....

Perhaps cards and gaming as well? Whist and bridge and cribbage and such...no poker.

I had this idea about doing a restaurant with my brother (who has had some culinary classes). It would have been a hibachi-style Japanese steak house that would take up one of the upper floors of a skyscraper, it would go well with the Name "Land of the Rising Sun".

i would bust into the joint and do a dramatic reenactment of "smooth criminal",anti gravity lean and all , then probably get my ass kicked by security :)
