Writer's Block: Agree to disagree

Have you ever stopped being friends with someone over differences in political views? Are there any issues that are so important to you that you cannot be friends with someone who holds a contrary opinion?

The only people I've ever deliberately "stopped being friends with" were those who wouldn't leave me alone on some political topic. Not because we disagreed on the topic, but because they wouldn't shut up about it. I've got better things to do with my time than be harangued at.

For what it's worth, I've taken to avoiding people who won't shut up about issues where I agree, too.

Most of the topics that would be important enough to me to break a friendship over are pretty basic, like "Is rape okay?" "Is murder an acceptable way of dealing with an issue?" or "Is genocide good for the economy?" But stuff like whether the demidupes or pooblioobs are in office? No way.

As you know, I'm fairly conservative in many respects. Yesterday, I had lunch and a long conversation with one of my state's preeminent gay activists who is far to the left on many topics. It was a pleasant conversation, in fact. She knows of my positions; we serve on a charity board together.

Probably our central point of largest disagreement is what to do about health care--and this is directly relevant to the organization we're both part of. We certainly weren't shy about revealing our perspectives on it.

It is possible to be civil, polite, even pleasant, and to benefit from exchanges of ideas.

It's very possible. :) I disagree with just about everybody I know on at least one political topic. Really for me it's more about manners than it is about the politics themselves.

For a high-profile example, take Michael Moore. I disagree with almost all of his politics as close as I can figure them, but more importantly, I think he's a jackass because of how he treated Charlton Heston. By contrast, I disagree with the late Carl Sagan on many topics too, but I'll always have affection for him.

One, though it wasn't directly because of a difference of political opinion, as much as it was that the 'gentleman' in question made an immediate vulgar gesture in regards to my parentage simply because I disagreed with him over a then-in-office president.
