I Hate Cars

Oh look, another $2500 worth of repairs.

How about I repair these guys with a shotgun?

yup here too we are paying off repairs on a car that does not even exist anymore (got totaled mid paying things off including the car payments themselves)

What is wrong with it? for that amount of coin, you could swap out the entire engine.

ew. If you're making repairs like that, it may be worth looking at trading it in for something newer. I mean, that could be most of a year's worth of car payments on something not too pricy.

I'm assuming this is the Platinum Pearl and the steering and not Bruce?

Re: echoing Dev
The struts on the Platinum Pearl are badly in need of replacing. The steering turned out not to be a bad thing at all (just belts tightened), and the oil leak is not a problem, apparently, but the struts have to be replaced, and when you replace the struts, you replace the upper strut mounts and align everything. Comes up to $2600.

We're thinking about trading both in on one newer minivan or SUV.

Re: echoing Dev
that's a bit high for struts, etc. I'd definitely get a 2nd opinion (since I assume this is not the dealership but your regular repairperson). Struts on the 240 (yes, I eventually should replace mine too) are about $1400 installed with the work you described.

If it's using more than a quart a month, the oil leak should be a "problem".

Re: echoing Dev
The original price quote for the struts was $1600, but that didn't include the upper strut mounts, which is what adds to the cost. The guy at the repair shop said he has the exact same car and he had to do the same thing himself.

I haven't noticed any oil leaking myself, so I don't think there is a problem there. The guy we talked to this time said he thought the stuff that was on there before was probably residual from when we had the valve gasket replaced. Made me think, "Well, I guess it's a good thing we didn't tell you to go ahead and replace it last time and spend $700 on it!"

Yikes! That's more than the time I had the engine rebuilt.

Y'know, you're not making me want to get back into driving, here. Gas, routine maintenance, license, registration, and insurance, unexpected repair costs... all of which leaves aside the fact that I really don't like sharing the road with the sorts of people who shouldn't be driving...

Sorry, until this country gets more rational about the whole driving phenomenon - by making the qualifications for a license something more than a feather test, to start with - I'm just going to opt out of the mess.
