On the horn of Africa, just at the mouth of the Red Sea, is a tiny little country called Djibouti (pronounced "ji-BOO-tee"). Due to its strategic position near such things as Somalia and the Persian Gulf, the U.S. has a strong military presence there. And, as over the years, I've come to know a fair number of militarily-associated folks, I find that on a fairly regular basis I hear about stuff going on in or around Djibouti.

But, my brain being what it is, I find myself stifling giggles whenever the topic is brought up, because I invariably spend the conversation hearing from the back of my head:

Choo-choo, choo-choo Djibouti!
Woo-woo, woo-woo Djibouti!
Choo-choo, choo-choo Djibouti!
Take me right back to the track, Jack!

It's a hard head to live in, sometimes.

I remember on Hollywood Squares (don't ask), Whoopi Goldberg was asked "Where is Djibouti?" She said "Mah booty is right here, where's YOUR booty? No, no, of course, it's in Africa..."

See my reply to tahamaki as to how that became a part of my indoctrination brief while I was deployed over in Djibouti. No doubt it has become a very active place with all that's been going on in both Semolina and Yemen.

Just now I can't recall if it was you or someone else that sent that icon to me when I was stationed in Djibouti but it got put to good use. I blew it put to 300% and used it as my last slide in the indoctrination brief I had to give every Monday. Older personnel coming in knew the song and found it a great joke in the midst of a day filled with 10 hours of PowerPoint presentations.

It was probably someone else... That came from a friend's journal. But it's still good for a laugh. :)

This reminds me of the old trick about picking the first country that comes to mind which name starts with a D. Then, take the second letter in the name and pick the first animal that comes to mind, then think of the color of said animal. And the thing is supposed to be a gray elephant in Denmark*. My friend Brad instead came up with a brown jaguar from Djibouti.

*For the record, I had a white egret from Denmark.

I got an unwanted phone solicitation the other night. Asked the operator where it was from. He replied that the message originated from Nigeria.

I told him I only accept Djibouti calls.

that's where that came from.

A: I sure as hell DID!

I giggle for other reasons.
Yeah, shake Djibouti!
Shake, shake, shake!
Shake, shake, shake!
Shake Djibouti, shake Djibouti!
