Writing a check to pay for air pump service call. So quaint! I feel like I should spell it "cheque."

I actually prefer cheques* for a lot of things. For one, since I use the carbonless-form "duplicator" cheques, I like having an independent written record of what I paid to whom and when in case there's a dispute; for another, the act of actually having to pull out the chequebook and write the expense out on paper reinforces in my mind the fact that I'm actually spending money on something. Debit cards and online bill paying makes it seem a bit more remote, and seems to make it just a bit too easy to lose track of what I'm spending when the money isn't actually passing through my hands in some physical form.

(* and I've always spelled it "cheques" -- one of several vestigial leftovers of having spent a couple of my formative childhood years in England, I guess :) )
