Bears Repeating

mouseferatu says...

You know what bugs me most about Prop 8 and the other anti-gay-marriage initiatives? It's not even that people feel that gay couples shouldn't get married; it's that they feel the issue is worth spending millions of dollars on. Really? How many people could the Church of LDS have fed? How many homes could they have built? How many surgeries could they have paid for?

No matter how strongly you oppose gay marriage, how can you pretend that fighting against other people getting married is an ethical use of your resources, when there's so much suffering to be alleviated?

What he said. Go start a soup kitchen or something!

Yes.

Yes, exactly.

The hungry need feeding? So what.
The homeless need homes? Big deal.
There are people who want to find jobs and need help? Yeah, and?

THE GAY PEOPLE WANT TO GET MARRIED!

Amen. Living in Utah, I'd probably be tarred and feathered for stating this, though. Bah.

See, I don't see this at all as being about the government saying what the basic human thing of marriage is -- it's the government saying what the -government version- of marriage is.

The government doesn't care about weddings performed in churches, in mosques, or down in your backyard by Brother Bob. The government cares about the legal contract that's signed by the married couple and the officiate and witness.

My church did start a soup kitchen. And in Bible Study, I got the majority of church leadership* to admit that the selective persecution of this one particular form of adultery is not only wrong, but flat-out hypocritical. Especially when we have divorced-and-remarried pastors, pastors overseeing marriages of divorcees (whose spouses are still alive), and especially the church molycoddling single mothers who don't always know which one is the father.

Defense of marriage, my left hindfoot. Maybe they should be more worried about divorce and pre-marital sex, which are damaging the institution of marriage?

The real tragedy is how this issue is preventing the spread of the gospel, which is our prime directive.
