MOAR Fox Studies!

Had to spent some time dad-sitting at the rehab place this evening; since he was sawing logs the whole time, I used it as a chance to do some more anthro-fox studies, including another appearance by Lariat Boy and a cameo by Disney's Robin Hood, wondering what happened to his hat.

Fox Studies 2: Electric Boogaloo

Some of these guys are a little too feline, but I do feel like I'm beginning to get a handle on the whole "vulpine" thing. For those who are wondering, yes I am moving in the direction of a specific character, but I want to get the "fox" part right first, before I start tacking the character bits on, even if I do keep drawing foxes with suspiciously-period collars.

The eventual design will probably be a fusion of Lariat Boy with Count Foxula there, although the ponytail option is still strong in the running.

I love your Count Foxula sketch! He looks ever so much like slightly-mad lower nobility...

Count Foxula is my fave out of all the sketches so far.

I love him, too! Very foxy. Although he'd look good with a pony tail, as well.

"My name is Fabian Fox... would you like a... cafe aulait?"
Aug. 25th, 2010 02:48 am (UTC)
-_- i have that.

We theoretically have him, too, but we couldn't find him. I was going to use him for a rough shape ref at weird angles!

And hooray for Robin Hood. :)

Looks like you're heading in the right direction with the thinner, more conical (if you could call it that) muzzle shape. Canines tend to be boxier, so it does set your character designs apart somewhat.

Maybe have a look at "Mongrels" (the Beeb's latest furry puppet series) for some inspiration/ideas, as they have a couple of fox characters who look pretty Vulpine for puppets.

And there's nothing wrong with looking feline :P

Looking feline is a great thing, when that's what you're going for!

By george, I think he's got it...
"I approve."

Although I can't stop this unexplained urge of adding mustaches with a thick black marker...

"Ahhhh yes... NOT GUILTY!"

I so need to get the sound byte for that one.

The bottom right makes me & me think "Vulpine Dr. Who". And that's not a bad thing.
Aug. 25th, 2010 01:19 pm (UTC)
Good to hear that I'm not the only one who thinks that sketch resembles the Doctor. The first Doctor in particular.
Aug. 25th, 2010 03:41 pm (UTC)
Very much so. Go Team The Doctor!

very impressive art work :)

now you need some foxes in boxes :P

Maybe the ears could be a little more vertical to counteract the felinity. Poking around fox photos, the outer ear edge on many of them is completely straight up and down, and almost all less than 30 degrees. 45 degrees is a bit much. Foxula's and top-left guy are spot on.

Adding vote for Foxula; very foxy, and also very Gneechy :-)

Foxy and Gneechy! Woot!

Normally those two don't go together. ;)

Yum yum yum, yum yum yum yum yum yum-yum yum yum; yum yum.

Yum yum!

In case you can't tell -- I like it! I like it! :)
Aug. 25th, 2010 11:33 pm (UTC)
I suspected that might be the case! Am I correct in thinking it's Count Foxula you're enthusing over? :)

I've been thinking
A couple suggestions, following up on yesterday's comments.

The head of a fox is smaller than that of a wolf.
The eyes and ears are proportionally larger. It makes them look cuter than wolves.

Think of it this way: When you draw a housecat as compared to a tiger (or tigress) think of the changes do you make to the face.

Holy moley!

Bottom right! Mine! *grabs!*
Aug. 26th, 2010 12:00 pm (UTC)
Bottom right is my favorite... he looks very dashing!
Aug. 27th, 2010 06:19 pm (UTC)
Count Foxula looks great! The muzzle shape (conical) looks spot on, the higher set eyes give him a more expressive look, and the cheek ruffs and ear balance each other in weight, as well as echo each other's shape. The body appears to be an afterthought, though. It's not connected right and lacks the appropriate mass/structure. Be careful of that. But the head? Wow. Very well done!
