Paperwork Makes My Brain Explode

Going to cons is not worth sales licenses and tax forms. It just isn't.

uh, you are using the webform, right?
only California is really a PITA. The PA webform is relatively streamlined.

FYI, we've got the California forms ready to go. You're listed as a "California reference," in case they contact you.

Sure, you say that now, but you know you'll be begging a fix after a few months cold turkey...

This was one of the nicer aspects of being a dealer at Mephit Furmeet when they were in Memphis -- Tennessee has this very civilized concept called the "special event tax form", where all you have to do as an itenerant vendor at a single-weekend event like this is to pick up a copy of the form (which MFM always thoughtfully provided a copy of in the dealers' info package) and fill it out, then mail it back to the TN Dept. of Revenue along with a cheque for the sales tax you owe. No need to register with the state, no need to keep track of tax IDs or file quarterly reports of $0 sales for all the months you're not in the state... Just five minutes of your time and a stamp.

I cannot understand for the life of me why more states -- hell, every state -- doesn't do this.

Agreed. This would be an extraordinary savings in time for all concerned, and likely to make MORE money for the states than the present systems.
