John Dunn Dev Doodles

New John Dunn Dev Sketches
New John Dunn Dev Sketches by ~the-gneech on deviantART

Noodling around with ideas for the "non-Frankenstein" version of John Dunn. I kinda dig the moustache version, actually, but I think he might have to lose the 'stache.

Comments, suggestions, etc. welcome and desired. :)

Moustache = Burt Reynolds.
No 'stache = Sean Connery.

Wearing the hat, he looks like an older Riddler.

I wasn't aiming for Sean Connery when I drew it, but I did see it afterwards. :D

To me the clean shaven version makes me think of Black Bart from Blazing Saddles, then again it may just be that he looks like he just gave Mongo a candygram.

I like the facial hair. My initial favorite is the upper-right, but the center is appealing, too. The flowing muttonchops don't work for me, but it might be the hat. The hat, combined with the muttonchops, makes him look Amish to me. I do really like the expression in the upper-left, though.

I'm a little worried that the upper-right might be too contemporary, but wardrobe might fix that. :)

The hat + sideburns looks carnival-barker to me. O.o. The expression looks, um, smarmy, I'd say. Doesn't read like Dunn, anyway. :/

Hehe, top center made me say "What on earth is Wolverine doing in the Gneech's strip?" I like the center as, for me, it says he's a damage dealer and fits the Victorian setting well. Also the top right has some aspects that reminds me of "The Master".

Wait, I thought the Master was a blonde guy who uses lightning to fly!

/CheesierBitOfNewSeries off ;)

re: Wolverine, yeah, I'll probably ditch the fuzzy sideburns idea; that was left over from the previous design. But I don't know what I'm going to replace it with!

I dunno, the old-style facial hair just looks odd on a black guy, if only because I guess I never saw it much o.0

I like the moustache one, honestly. Suits the time period but doesn't give me the same WTFness.

I know you said you were revamping his personality, but I guess he'll be less stoic?
Sep. 16th, 2011 03:18 pm (UTC)
A lot of his stoicism before was a result of having a mechanical larynx that creeped people out when he talked, and a general sort of retreat from society. ("I'm a monster!")

The new version is still fairly quiet most of the time, but when he say something it's usually pretty over-the-top or at least snarky. (There's a no small amount of Leonard Lion in there, too!)

I like the two on the right best, I think, but the expression on the no-facial-hair version is great. <3 The bowler version really doesn't work for me -- the facial features look Caucasian, to me. I think the beefier and somewhat rounded cragginess of the other versions works a lot better.

Yeah, I wasn't real pleased with the bowler-hat versions either. I have a look in my head I was aiming for with those, but I just can't lock it down and neither of them came out right.
