WITH THE OXFORD COMMA: We invited the strippers, JFK, and Stalin. WITHOUT THE OXFORD COMMA: We invited the strippers, JFK and Stalin.

Remember this, when any misguided editor tries to delete your Oxford comma, and smack them for it.

Frankly, I don't see the problem with removing the comma.

The 'ambiguity' comes from using the wrong delimiter in the first part of the sentence...

We invited the strippers; JFK and Stalin...
(Or possibly a ':' instead?)

NOW it makes sense...

Of course, we don't use the 'Oxford comma' in Norway.

Check my sentence below that absolutely REQUIRES an Oxford comma.

"We invited the strippers; JFK and Stalin..." doesn't make sense. "JFK and Stalin" is a sentence fragment that needs a predicate. JFK and Stalin did WHAT?

"We invited the strippers: JFK and Stalin..." same problem.

The only way a semicolon works in a list is if parts of that list ALSO require commas, like so: "The movies I saw this year are Star Wars; E.T.; and The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover."

The only way a colon works in a list is to set it off from the rest of the sentence, like so: "We invited: the strippers, JFK, and Stalin."

Thankyou so much for this!

I cannot believe how many grammar arguments I have had with ppl about this. I will now use this as a primary example.

THANK YOU!!! I've had quite a few twits try and tell me the comma was not important until I told them to punctuate this sentence:

My three favorite sandwiches are ham and swiss turkey and provolone and peanut butter and jelly.

Yes, that sentence needs to be corrected. If I'm inviting strippers, there's no way in hell that I'm inviting JFK and Stalin.

And here I was afraid I was getting to free with the commas in my writing.

Well, I am, a bit...but this gives me a valid excuse. ;)
