The Next Day of the Rest of My Life. Or Whatever.

Well, I got home at 2:00 p.m. after an 8-hour day @ Starbucks. My legs are complaining, and my feet fell off as I was walking home ... but overall it was a pleasant experience. The store is finally open, and we had customers in ... all the Starbucks groupies were gushing about having one in this location (which, I must admit, I'd wanted myself for a year and a half now); many people were very enthused about the drive-through. It still messes with my head, but hey, if they like it, it's a good thing we've got it.

The big "D'Oh!" of the day was when a spigot suddenly popped open, spraying water all over the place ... I plugged the broken bit with my finger while somebody scrambled underneath and turned off the valve underneath. Apparently, the little adjustey-thingie the regulates the flow through this particular spigot was just-this-side of flying out, and when somebody bumped it, plooiee! It was fixed in short order, tho.

The big "Awwwwww!" of the day was when [the manager] Matt's mother and girlfriend came in with flowers, balloons, and a barbershop quartet, and had them sing him sappy songs. All us baristas applauded profusely, and Matt gave them all free coffee.

Now I need to relax a while, unwind, and then do some drawing for tomorrow. And the beat goes on...

Life is Mysterious

Today last year, I was in St. Louis. It was a strange day. I expected it to be the end of a long journey; it turned out to be just another stopover, on an even longer journey to come.

Some lessons learned...

  • Don't ever believe that happiness can come from anyone but yourself. If you can't make yourself happy, then nobody, no matter how much you care about them, will do it for you.

  • When you're trying to change your life, remember that at least half of your psyche will resist it; and if it can't prevent the change completely, it will still try to recreate whatever situation you're trying to get out of, with just the names and faces altered.

  • The California Rockies are beautiful in the winter.

  • Life is subject to change without notice. Sometimes, emotionally speaking, you'll be hit by a truck. Fortunately, emotions are at least usuable again faster than bones are, even if true healing takes longer.

  • When someone offers you exactly what you want, take it. However...

  • When someone offers you exactly what you want, be prepared for the fact that you might not actually get it. And finally...

  • Generally, if you find yourself thinking, "you know, maybe I should just get the hell out now and save myself a lot of pain later," you're probably right.
