Election Fray

Well, the elections pretty much went exactly as I expected, right down to Erlich getting Maryland. The good news is that the sales tax raise in VA was defeated, and so were large numbers of democrats.

The bad news is, that a large number of republicans won.

The problem with republicans is that they run on issues that I get behind ... lowering taxes, cutting back government, etc. ... but then when in power they throw all that out the window and do stupid things like going after Roe v. Wade or expanding the despicable "war on drugs." In the current climate, we also have to worry about them establishing the House Committee On Stomping All Over Liberty So We Can Find Terrorists Wherever We Look.

The other problem with republicans getting in power is that the whacko religious right comes out in force, and they are some Evil, Evil People. :P And no, I don't mean people who are Christians and also republicans. I mean people who say things like "Gays caused 9-11." I live in Virginia, home of some of the most particularly evil ones, and I don't mind telling you, the idea of some of these people having any influence at all -- much less having a lot -- gives me the creeps. Christ must be rolling in his empty grave at the idea of these people associating themselves with his teachings. :-`

Support freedom: hug a libertarian today! 'cause people sure ain't voting for 'em!

Because people are always looking for an excuse to give me flack:

  • Being Christian doesn't make you evil. But it doesn't make you exempt from it, either. The whacko religious right, as I said already, does not refer to any Christian republican. It refers to the whacko ones. Many Christians are good people; in fact, most are. Same is true of most jews, most pagans, most muslims, most athiests, most agnostics, most buddhists, etc.

  • Generalizations about what republicans do in power is not a poke at individuals who vote republican. The truth of the matter is that anybody in power either starts out corrupt or becomes so somewhere along the way. If I have to choose between the big two parties, I'd rather have the Publioobs over the Demidupes any day. At the same time, they'd be in for a fight.

  • The Libertarian Party has its own share of whackos, and I don't want them in power any more than I want the whacko left or whacko right to be there, either.

  • Most people would think I'm a whacko for wanting a super-strict interpretation of the Constitution, which would make about 85% of our current government illegal.

  • Having a republican house, senate, and president does not make the U.S. into Nazi Germany, any more than having a democratic house, senate, and president made the U.S. into Stalinist Russia. Lighten up, people. The U.S. is a fundamentally free society, on a level more profound than the government can touch, no matter who's in power. Pick who you hate, Demidupes or Publioobs, I'd still rather be in a U.S. with them in power, than a lot of other places in the world.

Moving On to Other Subjects...

I wonder if I could get to a point where I could squeeze out four SJ strips a week, instead of the current three. I have actually been drawing effectively four a week for a while now, with occasional weeks off that then eat up the reserve.

As my depression works itself out and I get more usable time and energy, my productivity has gone back up considerably. However, I don't want to bite off more than I can chew and end up regretting it, either. Particularly if I want to start trying to put some more NN content up, as well as starting up the kung fu again whenever this much-anticipated promotion ever shows up, I need to carefully watch to make sure I don't overextend myself.

At the same time, I would really love to get SJ onto a M-Th schedule like TCM has now. Besides the fact that Vince is THE MAN *kowtow, kowtow*, I suspect that a lot of the constant hum of activity in the TCM forum comes from the fact that there's something new almost every day.

Sluggy, of course, updates every friggin' day, and Sluggites are insane. I'm not sure if those two facts have any kind of causal relationship, but I feel there must be a correspondence in there somewhere.

Putting out more strips would make new books come out faster, too ... hmm...
