Happy Birthday, wabbitcalif!

Instead of Scumbag the Birthday Clown, my favorite Californian Lagamorph gets some Forgotten English instead!

The true expression of a word; the etymology or right meaning of a word.
--Thomas Blount's Glossographia, 1656

On this date in 1755, the first edition of Samuel Johnson's famous dictionary was published. Kett's Elements of General Knowledge (c. 1800) offered the following erroneous observation about this landmark reference work: "Our literature, indeed, dates a new era from the publication of Johnson's works. Many of his words are rarely to be met with in former writers, and some are purely his own fabrication. Note resucitation, orbity, volant, fatuity, devaricate, asinine, narcotic, vulerary, empergumatic, obtund, disruption, seniory, cremation, horticulture, germination, decussation, eximious, etc. If these words are not peculiarly Johnson's, I know not where they are to be found." Kazlitt Arvine's Anecdotes of Literature (1883) correctly refutes Kett's assertion: "Now, upon turning over Johnson's dictionary, I find all the above words occur in Pope, Bacon, Arbuthnot, Grew, Quincy, Wiseman, Harvey, Woodward, Newton, Glanville, and Ray, except horticulture ... So much for the research of Mr. Kett!" In addition, the word horticulture is found in Edward Phillips's 1678 dictionary.

Thanks for the Input, All!

Well, after looking at lots of stuff and in particular getting feedback from dilletante about the Sidekick, I decided to go ahead and get the Clié NX80V. It seemed to have the best ratio of usefulness to cost, for my purposes. The ubiquitousness of the Sidekick that David pointed out is a compelling argument in their favor, but the lack of extensibility shot 'em down in the end, I think.

Plus, the Clié has that big, beautiful screen -- and of course, this is the last model that does, le sigh. I wonder if there's hope for a permanent connection option for this model in the future?

I also got a wireless add-on keyboard, and the Clié comes with an AC adapter attachment, so I don't have to worry about being stranded without the cradle for power. I'll get the WiFi card separately this weekend, I expect, although I have no idea how I'll go about testing it once it comes. (Does Starbucks have WiFi in their stores? Or Panera, maybe? I am a babe in the woods when it comes to this whole WiFi thing.)
