All righty, here it is:
Before LotR, Conan and his ilk were the rulers of fantasy literature.
Well, it's pretty self-explanatory, isn't it? :) I was effusing about how cool it was that there were tough guy heroes in Fellowship of the Ring, and bemoaning the general limpness of a lot of contemporary fantasy.
It's kind of interesting to see how my attitudes have changed over time; in the commentary after the post I talk about gaming and how I wish I could play a Conan-ripoff CN fighter/barbarian/rogue in some game, just for the "cut loose and kick butt" fun of it, and I still would actually, but it's no longer quite the burning desire it used to be. I'm having fun with Theran the Warriormage now that the game has finally gained some levels; he's a tactical butt-kicker, rather than a brute force butt-kicker, which has another kind of charm all together. ;)
