Dumb Headlines

So when logging in to check my e-mail, I see the following set of headlines:

When stars buy real estate

Man shoots himself in groin

Increase your sex appeal

I just hope that's three seperate stories. 0.o

In other news, here's yesterday's Forgotten English...

Conventionalism; prudery ... after a character -- Mrs. Grundy, an imaginary censor of public and private morals -- in Thomas Morton's Speed the Plough (1798) ... a standard of propriety.
--Albert Hyamson's Dictionary of English Phrases, 1922

Birthday of William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863),
English novelist and satarist, who attempted to break the shackles of Victorian priggishness. William Walsh's Book of Literary Curiosities (1900) described the origins of a literary movement known as the Erotic School, with which Thackeray was affiliated: "A name applied (circa 1888) by American newspaper critics to a group of writers who consciously or unconsciously rebelled against the rigid conventionalities established by the Mrs. Grundys of literature. Such rebellion had already taken formal shape in the poems and novels of the Fleshly School and its successors. That school was a practical endorsement of the protest made by Thackeray, and after him Henry James, by Ouija, and by others that art was foolishly fettered."

Wow, I didn't even know they KNEW the word "erotic" back then! ;)

Cough Fu

Because of AnthroCon, pre-AnthroCon rushingness, and post-AnthroCon con cruddiness, I had been to one (that's ONE) Kung Fu class in the month of July ... and that was last Wednesday. So, sickly lion or no, I decided that I was just plain going to Kung Fu tonight. Fortunately, I managed to get a pretty solid nap between work and class ... unfortunately, that could only help so much.

Class kicked me up and down. I got dizzy; I got lightheaded; I started out wheezing and I ended up holding myself up with the stretch rail between sets.

Oh, and we did brick work. Readers of my past Kung Fu posts will probably remember how I loooooooove brick work. *whimper*

Nevertheless, while coaching another group, Sifu saw me go through the form on my own over in the corner. He came over, gave me some pointers, had me practice a couple of the moves, and said lightheartedly, "Okay, that's the form. You'll test on Monday."

Um, excuse me Sifu, did you just say that I'd test on M - M - Monday? But look at me! I'm a wreck! I can't even get through the warmup without gasping like a catfish! My lowest stance looks like I've barely got my knees bent.
