Status Report

My dad is okay; he's relatively comfortable and doing a lot of drifting in and out of sleep. The surgery is tomorrow, and then it's months of rehab! Yaaay. But hopefully he'll be up and about before too long.

On an unrelated note, over the past several days I've watched great swaths of Love Hina. I like it a lot, but it's definitely a weird little show. I love the way it goes off on these bizarre flights of fancy without ever blinking an eye ... one minute the main characters are blushing, stammering, and trying to work up the courage to confess their love for one another ... the next minute Tokyo is being rampaged by a giant robotic turtle. It's like ... well...

It's like a comic strip. :)

The "oh-no-I-crashed-into-the-woman's-bathroom-YOU-PERV!-*kablam*" routine does start to get stale after the third time in every episode, but this "Three's Company Redux" element is the only real weakness I've seen so far. Like Charlie Brown and the football, you gotta wonder why the hero keeps putting up with it. The rest of the writing is very strong; I particularly like the "theme" episodes. (E.G., one episode is basically "The Legend of Zelda" as a dream sequence, while another is an old black-and-white samurai epic.) The sense of humor, while it can be a bit Benny-Hillish (there's a lot of unintentional breast-grabbing goes on), is also very sly (I particularly laughed at Shinobu dressed as Red Riding Hood, trying to sell matchbooks, but you had to be there).

Anyway, that's all for tonight. See you tomorrow, everyone. :)
