Lost Boys: Why J.M. Barrie Created Peter Pan

I sometimes wonder if our culture's tendency to try to "kid-safe" the world comes from a misplaced resentment at having been forced to grow up ourselves. It's sort of a catch-22 ... the more insulated kids are from reality, the harsher a shock it is for them when they have to cope with it.

Heck, just look at the Buddha.

--Thomas Darlington's The Folk-Speech of South Cheshire, 1887

Birthday of William Schwenck Gilbert (1836-1911), English playwright and librettist, who collaborated with Sir Arthur Sullivan on such popular operettas as The Pirates of Penzance, The Mikado, and H.M.S. Pinafore, which brilliantly spoofed the shortcomings of the Royal Navy. Shortly after the demise of a composer Gilbert knew, an annoying fan who was unaware of the death inquired about that musician's current project. Gilbert discreetly replied that as far as he knew, the composer was "doing nothing." When the fan pressed him again, saying, "Oh, come now. Surely he must be composing something," the irritated Gilbert replied, "On the contrary, sir, he is de-composing."

Ba-bump-bump.

"Schwenck?"

Gah! Paperwork!!! >:E

Y'know, after TWO trips to the DMV in two weeks, several calls to the PA dept. of revenue, tracking down my new insurance at work, and so on, so on, so forth, I am getting just a WEEENCY bit sick of bureacracy!

So of course, I can't find my MFF dealer table paperwork. -.-

Argh. I'll go in to work and see if I left it there like an idiot; either way, from there it's off to the airport. See you in Chicago ... or if I won't, see you in a few days when I get back!
