Carpe Diem is DONE

More discussion tomorrow ... when it isn't 2 a.m. on Sunday night... *thunk!*

More Brigid and Gregery!

praeriedog is still analyzing!

If only he knew -- the awful truth! *snicker*

Ineffectual Trolls

So somebody registers w/ TalkAboutComics specifically for the purpose of posting a link in the SJ forum to another forum somewhere else ("It's Walky" I think, I didn't explore), where people seem to think the Tiffany/pants newsbox is horribly androgynous.

However, and yes, I'm going to be smug here, my forumites responded with a friendly and civil, "Well, maybe you should give the rest of the strip a shot and see what you think." (Well done, guys!) My own thought is that if you think that picture looks even vaguely masculine, you watch too much anime. So, no, I'm not too upset by that discussion.

Standard troll tactics, of course, are that if one criticism doesn't cause a snit, you switch to another one. So they switch from attacking the art to grousing about how many guest strips there are. Well, yes, there are, but it's a self-defeating criticism. The fact that so many cool people are eager to help out with the strip says to me that I must be doing something very right.

Net score: Suburban Jungle 2, troll 0. Poor old thing. :) Have a nice life.

(FWIW, I'm willing to entertain the notion that the person was not a troll but was actually just rather inept at starting a pleasant conversation ... but if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck...)

Bwahahahaha!

21st Century Fox is great today!

Well done, Scott! If I was in the websnarking business, I'd give you a tasty biscuit!

Some Stuff I've Learned...

...while working on Carpe Diem...

  1. Mmmm ... comic book format ... *drool*

  2. Scan'n'stitch isn't as bad as I feared, but it's more of a pain than it warrants. Draw at 8 x 12 next time.

  3. Working at 600 dpi is a major pain. Eeeevery tiny flaw is magnified by about 20 times!

  4. Working on two pages at once is way more efficient than one. While the first round of ink on one page is drying, I can be working on inking the other page. This would apply for SJ in a big way ... and just imagine how katayamma would plotz if I gave him four strips to color at once...

  5. The "fold a page in quarters and do thumbnail layouts" technique really works!

  6. Next time, play with layout more. This time was pretty straight grid layout ... it works, but lacks sparkle.

  7. Find ways to add more black.

  8. 1/4" borders between panels are probably too large.

  9. Get a better art triangle.

  10. Edit: Make sure you've got ample blank space in the talkiest word balloons!

There's probably more, but that's all I can remember right now. I need a nap!

Mysterious Portents

I'm going to say something that may shock you.

Eventually.

Attack of the Werecartoonist!

I wasn't going to ... really I wasn't ... but it's been two weeks since I drew SJ, man -- TWO WEEKS! *choke* I was WEAK! *sob*

So, yeah ... no work done on Tough Breaks tonight ... but I've started working on next week's strips.

If I had ... if I had two more scripts ... I could start working on a second page...

So ... very ... efficient... *drools, stares off into space*

PS: Y'know, given that I was up until 2:00 a.m. last night working on Carpe Diem, I really should go to bed early tonight, shouldn't I?

PPS: Maybe I should have titled this post "Attack of the WEIRD Cartoonist."

PPPS: I love you guys! ^.^ G'nite!
