Some Forgotten English

Yesterday's and today's, lj-cut for your protection. I figure word wonks will be interested enough to click, and everybody else would just skim over the entry anyway. ;)

Actually, I remember that Fowler quote from an essay by James Thurber; that particular essay convinced me that all the nonsense about split infinitives was indeed something I ought to resolutely ignore. ;)

Sounds like an episode of Love Hina. 0.o

The question, of course, is what to draw! I'm open to suggestions. :) Or I might just take one of these...

Oh Holy Drool...

All the Trias You Can Eat, complete with their own custom-made tackle box. This was previously only available in the U.K.

But ... $1487 plus shipping...

Right, well, even assuming I could get $175 on eBay for the Prismacolors ... that's a lot of badges and commissions to sell. 0.o

Aheheheh. Maybe I should start with the set of 72, whattya think?

EDIT: Well, I bought the 72-marker set from ArtSuppliesOnline because they had it for cheapest ($240 including free shipping, or roughly $3.33 per marker). So, we'll see what we'll see!

Well THAT Didn't Go According To Plan

After work, laurie_robey and I piled into her Camry (a.k.a., "The Platinum Pearl") and trundled west on Route 7 to "Joe's Crab Shack" for dinner of shrimp, crab legs, and various starchy plantstuffs. So far, so good. :) Our next target was Dulles Town Center, where my intended victim was Love Hina: The Perfect Collection. (Yes, I did also buy a boatload of markers today ... it's payday, and I've been saving up! But I digress.)

Key into ignition. Key turn.

Quiet clicking sound.

Nothing else.

This is bad.

We had panel lights and the dome light worked (dimly), so our first thought was that the battery was dying and therefore couldn't turn the starter over. It's a 2000 model, probably this is the battery it came with, now's about the right time for it to die. So we called AAA, who happily told us a tow truck would be along in an hour and fifteen minutes or sooner.

An hour and a half later, the towing company called us and said they'd be there in five minutes or less. Le sigh. The parking lot of "Joe's Crab Shack" is lovely this time of year -- if you like cold, windy places. The restaurant does at least pump out a steady stream of pop tunes ranging from "If You Want My Body and You Think I'm Sexy" to "867-5309 (Jenny)" ... so I wasn't bored! Cheesy upbeat tunes + nothing to do = Gneech does the hustle in the parking lot! (Those who threw my 30th berfday party may remember the discussion of "Macarena" we had there.)

Anyway, jumper cables ahoy, and car start! Sputter. Sputter. And car die. -.- Quick, flag down Mr. Tow Truck Guy before he drives off and get him to tow us to Carmax, where we bought the silly thing. When we get there, the service center is closed, making it difficult for us to find someone willing to tell us where the Platinum Pearl can be stashed until Monday morning. We do find one guy, who stares at us with a deer-in-the-headlights expression and tells us multiple times that they're closed. "Yes, we know you're closed. But the car doesn't run, so we need to know where you want us to put it until you're open again." "But we're closed!" I don't think we were speaking Swahili, but I suppose at that point just about anything was possible.

Shortly thereafter, Mütti and hantamouse kindly came and rescued us from the horrors of sitting in the Carmax lounge listening to CNN prattle on about the fact that Martha Stewart is out of jail and turned all mellow. While I was trying to give Mütti directions to our house, tye_g_wolfee called up and invited us to go shooting again tomorrow. Unfortunately, between Kung Fu (which has not been attended for the better part of two weeks) and needing to get Tough Breaks out the door, I had to decline. It was particularly a bummer 'cause he claims to have acquired a Baretta modelIdidn'tquitecatch with the intent of having me shoot it -- I've never had anybody get a gun in my honor before!

(Okay, I suspect that he didn't get it just for me ... but humor me! It was a difficult evening.)

Anyway, we're home at least, and we'll be driving Bruce a bit more than usual for the next several days! Alas, we did not get Love Hina. Curse you, entropy, you win this time!

But ... there's always dinner break tomorrow... *dunh-dunh-DUNNNNHHH*

G'nite world! Sleep well.
