Conan Civilization Sucks

If It Ain't Fun, Why Play?

I hate to say it but as of sometime Friday night, I gave up on Neverwinter Nights 2. Somewhere in the midst of Jerro's haven, playing run-and-fetch for the various demons, I realized that I wasn't having any fun in NWN 2 and hadn't been for some time.

Technically, it's a very nice game. But the writing and level design ... ugh. Annoying NPCs that you can't get rid of, maps that are all variations on an S-shaped path, binary "you are either LG or CE and never the twain shall meet" thinking ... and let's not forget the oh-so-much-fun idea of micromanaging your own keep. By all means, don't let me go take care of the bugbears, when I can have it reported that my troops tried to fight them but failed instead.

And what's the deal with everybody (except for a few select demons) wearing turtlenecks and gloves? Would it hurt to let my barbarian go shirtless? Since when do dancing girls dress like Amish women?

I repeat that technically (i.e., creating environments and so forth), it's very good. I'm looking forward to see what people do with the toolset; if we're lucky, we'll get a few "premium modules" on par with "Pirates of the Sword Coast" (which was quite good). But that's far in the future, I'm afraid. Right now all NWN 2 is going to do is sit on the hard drive and wait.

Disappointed. So very, very disappointed.

Back to Jade Empire for my gaming fix, I guess!
