The system admin gasped. "I--" he started. "I tracked it down through the logs."

I couldn't breathe; perspiration ran down the side of my face as I haltingly, urgently held the receiver up to my ear. "Yes?" I said. "Tell me! I must know!"

In a voice hollow with dread, the system admin choked, "The e-mails are coming from -- your alternate account!"

Cosmic Horror, or Old News?

I think that one of my problems with Call of Cthulhu is that, while the idea that humanity has just appeared in an eyeblink of the universe, spinning away on our tiny little microdot-on-a-microdot planet may have been a realization to blast the mind in the 1920s, it's not exactly a newsflash to anybody around these days. We live in a society that thinks quantum uncertainty makes for funny jokes about cats and has mathematical formulae showing just exactly when the expansion of the universe overcame the ability of gravity to make it contract again. So far from being driven mad by the existence of Azathoth, Shub-Niggurath, and Yog-Sothoth, I expect that at this stage we'd find it comforting to know for sure we aren't alone in the universe.
