Thanksgiving Was Happy

Strangely enough, I liked hosting the whole family at our house better than going over to one of theirs because it meant we were in control of the situation and could make sure it ran smoothly, had good food, and so forth. Brother, brother-in-law and nieces were happily installed in front of the football game while mother, father, and sister were happy to engage in "deep conversation" about the state of the Catholic church (and whatever other rambles came by) around the table, laurie_robey and I floated, and the cats provided entertainment for all.

My father is showing his mortality, alas ... he's still "all there," but he's losing his ability to maintain a conversational facade -- every slightly sad or potentially ticklish topic causes him to speak in a breathless tone that's "not quite crying," if you see what I mean. For somebody who's spent his whole life as Mr. Stony Face (except when clowning), this is a pretty extreme change. He's had a long life and it's kicked him around a bit, but he's content these days and considers himself a fortunate man, which is gratifying.

So yesterday, we were thankful for another year with my dad. :)

Today I intend to spend mostly working on the SJ 10-Year Collection or my next novel; haven't decided which yet. Shopping? Pfui. "Black Friday" can bite me.
