I.T. Crowd FAIL!

In Which Gneech Whines About Technology

If you don't want to hear a bunch of whining, I suggest you skip down to the Sinfest comic at the bottom of this post, which is awesome, and ignore the rest. If you keep reading past this point, you've got nobody to blame but yourself.

First, a word on whining...

...the little footstamp at the end gets me every time!

Anyway, the subject of today's whine is "to-do lists," and more specifically, the fact that for some reason they seem to be incredibly difficult for software companies to not screw up.

Now, I love me some to-do lists. I have dubbed my personal one the "Too Much To Do" list, but that's because I am notorious for wanting to do everything in the universe, but always forgetting which bit comes next. So I write them all down! Or more accurately, I put them into my to-do list in Outlook.

...which is only useful when I'm at my computer. ¬.¬

Obviously, what's needed is a cloud-based solution for a to-do list that syncs with Outlook. And I thought I had found that in ToodleDo, a web-based to-do list that has iApps and does, in theory, sync with Outlook.

For a while.

Until it stops.

At which point you have to delete all your tasks in ToodleDo, nuke the sync record database, and do a fresh sync to start it up again. Then it works, hurray!

For a while.

Until it stops.

ToodleDo claims it's a bug in the Outlook API, and it may be, but that doesn't help me. I would bet that if, say, Google made a to-do list app, it wouldn't have this problem. But I also notice that Google doesn't make a to-do list app.

Looking around the web for solutions, the only consensus seems to be "use ToodleDo and dump Outlook," which I don't want either. I'm no fan of MicroSoft, but as an organization tool, Outlook is an excellent one-stop-shop for keeping my mail, calendar, contacts, and to-do list together. For e-mail and calendar, I can sync with Google quickly and easily, so why is the to-do list, which seems such a core, no-brainer piece, such a problem?

So tonight, I get to play "purge the database" again, and try to make ToodleDo work for another week. Until it stops. But in the meantime, I'm going to keep looking around for another solution. There may not even be one, but I gotta try.

Despite life's efforts, we hit the gym again tonight. I figure every time we don't want to go but do anyway counts as a victory!

Weight: 329 lbs., what the heck?

There must be something fundamentally wrong either with that scale, or with the way I'm using it, unless I somehow put on 11 lbs of pure muscle over the weekend (which I find unlikely).

In other news, as a followup to my post earlier today, ToodleDo randomly started working again. I have no idea why, any more than I had any idea why it stopped. Go fig! Maybe it started working again just to shut me up. ;)

In other other news, in case you're not subscribed to it, Episode Six of the Short Story Geeks Podcast, featuring an interview with Peter S. Beagle went up today! We're having a great time with it. :)

In other other other news, does anybody know how to go about getting custom hard cases manufactured? I need to get something made up to carry my proton pack to conventions in, and a cardboard box ain't gonna cut it. I've done a basic Google search, but haven't come up with much. I'm thinking I'll probably need to go to someplace local where they can take the thing and build the case around it, but I don't even know where to start looking for such a thing.

In other other other other news, I finished watching the first season of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic over the weekend. As you can probably tell from the artwork/videos that have been floating up out of me, I'm pretty much a brony now. :) Expect the requisite Bronified Gneech pic to appear soon in a LiveJournal near you. ;)

I think that's all for now, and enough too. G'nite everybody, and have an awesome tomorrow!
