A Return to Cautious Optimism on D&D Next

I picked up a D&D Next Starter Set and have only glanced through it so far, but I'm liking what I've seen. If this had been what 4E was like, the past five years of gaming history would be very different. There's an interesting summary of changes here, designed to acclimate 4E GMs to 5E, but the immediately obvious takeaway from it is "It's recognizably the d20 system again."

That said, for the moment at least I'm still good with Pathfinder and have no particular reason to jump. The real test will be what they do with electronic support, something WotC has been notoriously bad about. If they try to hoard it all in-house again, I'll be like, "Nah, later guys." That's just an invitation to have your chain yanked for five years. If they license the system to Hero Labs, I'll be a lot more impressed.

Nevertheless, I'm pleased by what I see-- D&D products may just be worth getting again!

Hobbit Trailer

Just a note: if you are fond of the various dwarves of Thorin's company, you may want to skip film #3. Just sayin'.

PS: Also skip Fellowship of the Ring, considering what happened to Balin.
