Down, Dog

Something I was not expecting with the new job, besides the afib attacks (sigh), was that I keep coming off every shift ridiculously stiff and unable to move for the next three hours or so– and walking in a bent over "old man" shuffle.

This, as Churchill so aptly expressed it, is nonsense up with which I shall not put. I have no intention of being an old man at 86, much less 46.

So today I loaded the "beginner" Yoga course into DailyBurn, on the grounds that with my heart all flibbertygibberty and being on heart-rate regulating meds as it is, cardio was nowhere near as useful as stretching and flexibility.

All I can guess is that either the people at DailyBurn have a warped sense of humor, or that they're so sensitive about people saying Yoga isn't "real" exercise that they are trying to make it Nintendo Hard. Because whatever these moves were, they weren't for beginners.

I've taken Judo and Kung Fu; I can do squats, and crunches, and planks, and when I'm in form I can do burpees and so on. The moves in this video? No. I could do Down Dog and Cobra Pose. Oh, and I could stand on the mat and breathe. That stuff, I could do.

Being unfamiliar with the routine didn't help, since the instructor just barrels on through as if you know what all the new words mean. And a lot of the stuff that's in there I could probably work up to, particularly if I wasn't being beat up by a physically punishing job. But still, the whole point of a beginner program is that you don't know what the words mean, and you don't have the chops to stand on your neck.

So, yeah, that was a bit frustrating, but at the very least I got some stretching in. :) Afterwards, I did a few minutes of meditation concentration on chakra activation, which is a complex topic worth a whole (other) post. However, I was pleased with the results, and feel quite energized now.

Shower time!
