In Which I Become That Guy

Sitting in a Starbucks, tapping away on my Airbook, sipping on a toffee nut mocha. Have I mentioned that I'm wearing a scarf, a sweater, and clunky square glasses? Yes, I am officially That Guy. How did this come to pass?

You may recall my recent posts about productivity and my desire to get out of the house, etc. Today presented an opportunity to put a new working model to the test, in the form of me having the car to go to a dentist appointment, and so I decided to take it. Instead of the usual lazy stroll through my feeds, followed by various attempts to get myself to focus and work, I spent the morning writing on Issue Four (which is going to be a fun issue for me, I suspect), and will spend the afternoon either doing more of the same, or working on a submission for the next Roar anthology, depending on where my muse takes me. Both need doing.

I'm thinking about designating one day a week (perhaps Thursdays, for logistically-convenient reasons) as "Work From Not-At-Home Day," in which I would drive laurie_robey to work, then take the car to a convenient haunt in the neighborhood, be it a Starbucks, the B&N over at Tyson's, or who-knows-where, and camp out there for the morning, working on whatever I can carry with me, probably writing projects but also possibly paperwork/accounting, sketches, or layouts (which I still do in notebooks with pencil, despite having gone digital for the actual creation of comic pages). Then lunch with Laurie (something I have sorely missed since leaving the day job), and then to a different hideout for the afternoon of the same. This way I'm not bogarting a space and get some variety.

If successful, this would have the dual benefit of getting me some of that "being out in the world" I've been missing, plus giving me focused time on the writing aspect of my new career, which has somewhat floundered in the past months. The writing part used to be the easy part, but I cannot deny that for whatever reason, it's just not happening when I sit down to my desk. I have an outline for a furry novel (!) that hasn't gone anywhere, not to mention a finished first draft of a Michael Macbeth story that was my NaNoWriMo success in 2013, and a general desire to be doing more things that aren't SJ and Dungeons and Denizens. One day a week laser-focused on doing such things might be just the thing to get them rolling... and if they start to take off, might very well make the whole "get a job at B&N or someplace like that" superfluous.

We'll see. :) In the meantime, it's time to switch back to Google Docs. ;)
